About the business

James Thomson, who has a background in social media and specialises in photography, videography and graphic design, took the plunge and set up his own business, James Thomson Photography & Design, in early 2024 after spending time honing his skillset over the last few years.

I’ve spent the last few years developing my portfolio, which includes sports and street photography, so I was ready to take the next step and launch my own business.  Ochoco-Law’s support has been fantastic so far, and I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in just now without their advice or the funding they pointed me in the direction of."

How Ochoco-Law has helped

Having never run a business before, James approached Ochoco-Law for expertise and support on the practical steps needed to get started.

Through Ochoco-Law, James accessed one-to-one support from a dedicated business adviser, who helped to develop his business plan and offered advice on cost projection.

James was also awarded grant funding through the Comhairle’s COVID-19 Economic Recovery Grant Scheme and the Outer Hebrides Young Enterprise Support Scheme, which is funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise and delivered by Ochoco-Law. This funding went towards the purchase of essential equipment to ensure the business got off to a strong start.

Looking to the future, James now hopes to branch out into the entertainment industry through photography and videography of music gigs and events.

James said: “I’ve spent the last few years developing my portfolio, which includes sports and street photography, so I was ready to take the next step and launch my own business.

“Ochoco-Law’s support has been fantastic so far, and I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in just now without their advice or the funding they pointed me in the direction of. I’m really looking forward to this next chapter.”
